Summary
When choosing the hardware, the focus was mainly on how and what students are learning in the third grade. With 5 new all-in-one computers, students can stay up to date with the latest programs and software. The five computers chosen are very versatile, with touch screens and wireless keyboards. The computers are very space-saving which is very important in a classroom with 25 students. They are easy to use and would appeal to young students. Having printers in a classroom with computers is also very important. As students are writing stories, researching, and working on projects, having two printers in the classroom would be very beneficial for both the students and teachers. Teachers would not have to spend valuable learning time taking students outside of the classroom for printing purposes and students can take better advantage of the school's resources if these resources are not available at home. As reading being a big focus in the third grade, especially for standardized tests such as the FCAT, some type of reading hardware seemed only necessary. We have requested that 3 Nooks, which are electronic devices that store many books and are viewed on a screen, are purchased for our classroom in order to encourage reading and writing. Students would take turns using the Nooks and could even take them home daily.
The software items that were chosen offer a wide range of skills that are relevent to the ages of the students in a third grade class. Since we chose to focus on the subject of Language Arts for this scenario, all of these programs can help the students improve their vocabulary and grammar skills. Kidspiration allows students to visualize connections between various subjects, text to pictures, or even subtopics within a general topic. The program Mavis Beacon Keyboarding Kids is a fun and interactive way to help students improve their keyboard skills; these skills will be crucial throughout the students' lives as they compose essays and complete online courses. The software Reading Comprehension Booster teaches students to find the main idea and conclusion of a passage, along with other vital tips to improve their reading comprehension. Included in the program are assessments and feedback as to help improve the student's skills. In addition, the Starter Paragraph Punch program teaches students how to develop short essays from prompts included in the software. From a thesis statement, to a main body paragraph, and a conclusion, this program provides the lessons to help students improve their overall writing skills.
